The National Civil War Museum
The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is a profound journey into one of the most pivotal periods in American history. The museum is dedicated to presenting an unbiased and comprehensive view of the Civil War and the human experiences that shaped this tumultuous era.
A striking statue of President Abraham Lincoln greets visitors, symbolizing the impact of his leadership. The museum’s exhibits cover the war chronologically, beginning with the causes of the conflict and concluding with its aftermath and Reconstruction. The array of artifacts, photographs, and personal accounts vividly brings to life the stories of soldiers, civilians, and leaders from both the Union and Confederate sides.
The museum’s collection includes over 24,000 artifacts, ranging from weaponry and uniforms to letters and diaries. These personal items offer a poignant glimpse into the lives of those who endured the war’s hardships. Interactive displays and multimedia presentations further enhance the educational experience. One artifact on display struck me—a revolver belonging to Andrew Curtin. While visiting Bellefonte, PA, I learned of Curtin’s role in the Civil War and Gettysburg. One of the highlights is the exhibit on the Emancipation Proclamation, which explores President Lincoln’s executive order’s profound impact on the course of the war and the lives of the enslaved.

Harrisburg, The Capitol of Pennsylvania
The Pennsylvania State Capitol Building, completed in 1906, is a majestic symbol of the state’s rich history. Joseph Miller Huston designed this architectural masterpiece, renowned for its Beaux-Arts style, combining classical Greek and Roman elements with Renaissance influences.
The building’s centerpiece is its stunning dome, inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The dome rises 272 feet above the ground and is adorned with a 14-foot gilded statue known as “Commonwealth.” The interior of the Capitol is impressive, featuring grand marble staircases, opulent chandeliers, and intricately painted murals that depict Pennsylvania’s history, culture, and industrial achievements.
The Capitol’s House and Senate Chambers are richly decorated. The Pennsylvania State Capitol was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2006. Visitors can take guided tours to explore the building’s magnificent spaces, learn about the state’s legislative process, and appreciate the artwork and craftsmanship.
Whether you’re a history buff or love architecture, the Capitol Building in Harrisburg is a must-see. It is one of the most impressive capital buildings I have seen in the country.
Hotel Hershey
The Hotel Hershey offers a luxurious retreat with the sweetness of its surroundings. This iconic hotel, established by Milton S. Hershey in 1933, combines classic elegance with modern amenities, creating an ideal destination for travelers seeking relaxation and adventure.
The hotel’s majestic exterior resembles a grand Mediterranean villa. The lobby, adorned with rich woodwork and elegant chandeliers, speaks to timeless charm. There are stunning views of the hotel’s meticulously landscaped gardens or the rolling hills of Hershey.
The Hershey Hotel boasts an array of amenities to delight its guests. The Chocolate Spa at the Hotel Hershey provides indulgent treatments incorporating the hotel’s signature ingredient—chocolate.
I enjoyed breakfast in an elegant and inviting setting at The Circular, the hotel’s flagship restaurant. The buffet was plentiful with made-to-order omelets, small Belgian waffles, and any bread you could ask for, as well as eggs, sausage, bacon, and many other items. Guests enjoy their meals overlooking the hotel’s garden. Trevi 5 offers a taste of Italy, and Harvest celebrates local and regional ingredients with farm-to-table offerings.
This beautiful setting has a shuttle to take guests to explore Hershey’s many attractions, including Hershey Park, Gardens, and the Hershey Story Museum. Whether you’re indulging in a spa day, savoring gourmet meals, or enjoying the local attractions, the Hershey Hotel provides an incredible escape in the heart of Chocolate Town, USA.
The History of Hershey
“The Sweetest Place on Earth” owes its origins and rich history to Milton S. Hershey, an innovative entrepreneur and philanthropist. Born in 1857 in Derry Township, Pennsylvania, Hershey’s journey to establishing a chocolate empire began with humble beginnings and numerous business failures. However, his relentless determination and visionary ideas eventually led to the creation of the Hershey Chocolate Company in 1894.
Milton Hershey’s breakthrough came with the development of a formula for milk chocolate that was both affordable and high-quality. In 1900, the Hershey Chocolate Company began producing its first milk chocolate bars, quickly gaining popularity. Hershey built a factory in Derry Township, strategically located near dairy farms that could supply fresh milk to meet growing demand.
Construction of the Hershey chocolate factory commenced in 1903, and by 1905, the plant was operational. Hershey envisioned more than just a factory; he dreamed of creating a model town for his workers. He invested in the community, building comfortable homes, schools, parks, and recreational facilities. This vision culminated in establishing Hershey, Pennsylvania, which reflected his community ideals, quality of life, and social responsibility.
The town continued to flourish, and in 1907, Hershey introduced the iconic Hershey’s Kisses. Over the years, Hershey expanded his philanthropic efforts, founding the Milton Hershey School for orphaned boys in 1909, ensuring his wealth would benefit future generations. Today, Hershey, Pennsylvania, is not only a testament to the enduring legacy of Milton S. Initially founded as a school for orphaned boys, the institution has become one of the most successful and comprehensive residential schools in the United States, serving boys and girls from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The school’s endowment, funded by Hershey’s wealth and the profits from the Hershey Company, ensures that students receive free education, housing, clothing, medical and dental care, and meals.
The Hershey Story Museum
Located in the heart of Hershey, Pennsylvania, the Milton S. Hershey Museum delves into the life and legacy of Milton S. Hershey. Opened in 2009, this museum offers an immersive experience, showcasing Hershey’s remarkable journey from humble beginnings to becoming a renowned chocolatier and philanthropist.
Visitors to the Hershey Story Museum can explore a variety of exhibits. The museum leads visitors through Hershey’s early entrepreneurial ventures, groundbreaking success with milk chocolate, and the development of the Hershey Chocolate Company. Interactive displays and multimedia presentations bring to life the challenges and triumphs Hershey faced.
One of the museum’s highlights is the “Chocolate Lab,” where visitors can participate in hands-on classes to learn about chocolate-making processes and create sweet treats. I made a S’mores chocolate bar. It was delicious! I also participated in a chocolate “Tastings” experience. It gave me a quick global journey through chocolate with samples from six countries. I must say the Mexican Chocolate offered a rich, deep flavor.
I highly recommend it. The Hershey Story Museum. The docents are helpful and knowledgeable. The museum is more than just a history lesson; it celebrates innovation, resilience, and the enduring legacy of a man who believed in making a positive difference in the world.
